Understanding the Intricate Story of Critical Role' Fourth Campaign: A Helpful Overview
Critical Role's newest storyline explores the fresh realm of this new domain, a universe completely distinct from the well-known former world where previous campaigns took place. In this realm, deities were slain by humanity just within living memory, sorcery becomes unpredictable, and society must figure out how to rule their affairs lacking celestial direction.
The World of the Fourth Campaign
Whereas Exandria represents a universe defined by divine presence, the current setting is marked by their complete absence. Within recent history, a transformative battle took place, and people defeated the final of divine beings. With the seven lords of creation eliminated, humanity were forced to adapt by themselves in a new world, teeming with chaotic sorcery and instability.
Our primary setting for the first installment is Dol-Makjar, which is situated on the east side of an area known as Kahad. The settlement highly regards the revolutionary heroes of the defining battle. Sculptures of these heroes project from the walls of the city, pushing against adjacent highlands like they're holding them back.
Although Dol-Makjar acts as the beginning location, numerous other places are referenced throughout the narrative. One notable place is the Rookery, evidently the cultural district of the city, where bards, writers, actors, and assorted creatives dwell. Within this district that the story unfolds the majority of the episode during the first episode. Furthermore Halandil's theater, the Dithyramb of Azgra, can be found.
Further into the territory lies another city called Dol-Rungja, yet the important regarding this place is still revealed.
Tir Cruthu embodies the realm of fae creatures and a mysterious place outside physical reality. It seems Tir Cruthu has disappeared, though, and the gateway to the magical dimension was sealed. The significance regarding this event is yet to be explained, but it appears to influence this character, who has now begun to age since becoming separated from that world.
Ultimately, there is the Mournvale, a territory remote from the main city and in which this character and a particular group dwell. It appears the territory of elven folk, but once more, many aspects stay unexplained currently.
The Plot of This Adventure
The story begins in the settlement of Dol-Makjar. During the opening of the premiere, the city's inhabitants come together for a significant gathering: the execution of Thjazi Fang. According to the announcer, this individual is going to be executed for acting as "a turncoat, sorcerer, assassin, and obvious insurrection against the community and the citizens." The character formerly a military legend, but presently he's seen as a lawbreaker by the ruling council to the administrative body.
At Thjazi's execution, thirteen different people with ties to him come together to observe. Arcane power quickly grew uncontrolled and erratic lacking divine beings existing, and the question about the final resting place of the dead travel, now that the gods have ceased available to ferry them to the next world, remains answered.
Predictably, people banded together and commenced creating their society anew. Though, as predicted, not everyone approved of the direction this changed existence should appear. While we don't know comprehensive information concerning the War of Axe and Vine, it's discussed multiple instances in the premiere, and this individual was regarded a military legend after that conflict concluded. Nevertheless, after two years, he launched the Falconer's Rebellion against the Sundered Houses of the settlement. The cause is still explained, but since Thjazi observes that the ruling clans "maintain absolute authority", we can safely assume several points: the insurrection proved unsuccessful and the Sundered Houses' authority continues to be absolute in the settlement of the setting.
