The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming seems particularly strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a wide array of unique mechanics.
Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine croaking cultural moment.
