Exposing Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.

Synthetic graphics purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained following his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered many millions of views on social media.

How AI Images of the President Appeared Rapidly

The first fabricated AI image seemingly showing him led off a plane surfaced a brief time later. The graphic was absent from any official government accounts; it was instead posted on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved Google’s SynthID, which found the picture was generated or edited with Google AI.

Additional synthetic visuals began to spread in the ensuing hours, seemingly depicting different views of Maduro in custody. Discernible identifying marks on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

The detection tool confirms the further images were similarly generated or edited AI technology.

Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump posted the genuine photograph of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was released, synthetic pictures continued to spread but were updated to show the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.

Online investigation reveal these updated fakes were first posted on the video platform by a digital art account. Again, SynthID found these further images were produced with Google AI.
